Elected officials must ensure that equality is not just an idea, but a reality

Happy National Law Day! This year’s theme is “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All.”

AAJ President Mary Alice McLarty comment on this year’s theme:

“A cornerstone of equality and civil rights in America is the Constitutional right of individuals to have their claims heard by an impartial judge and jury through the civil justice system. This gives all Americans the power and ability to ensure their rights are upheld. As President John Adams said, 'Representative government and trial by jury are the heart and lungs of liberty.’”

After the Storm: Tips for Consumers Dealing with Insurance Agencies

The recent snow storm barreling the North East is just the first of many obstacles people affected by Sandy will face as they begin to rebuild their lives.  Some families may be lucky enough to have their claims heard immediately and settled fairly, but this is not always the case; insurance companies are too often eager to profit at the expense of the destitute.  Hurricane Katrina brought many examples of such horrific behavior.

Improv is no joke

When people hear the word improv, often the first thing that comes to mind is comedy. And true enough, actors and comedians use improvisational techniques to make us laugh. But what you may not realize is that improvisation is more than telling jokes—it’s about navigating change, maintaining poise, and thinking on your feet.

We Need You to Help Protect the Right to Vote this Election!

With less than three weeks until Election Day, we need hundreds of volunteers across the country to help on November 6, 2012 to ensure every American’s right to vote.

This will be the third Presidential election in which I have worked to protect the most fundamental aspect of Democracy–the right to vote. I have previously volunteered in New Mexico and Florida, where I’m headed back to this year. Working at a polling place on Election Day is both fun and extremely rewarding.

PayPal Users Beware!

Starting November 1st, PayPal will be the latest company to include a clause in its user agreement that would eliminate the right to seek justice in a court room. This clause would force consumers into arbitration.
